Mora – A Cultural and Historical Gem in the Heart of Sweden
Authentic Sweden At A Glance
Mora is situated on a scenic peninsula, surrounded by Lake Siljan, the Bay of Saxviken, Lake Orsa, and the Dalälven River. From December to April, the frozen lakes and snowy landscapes invite you to enjoy ice skating, skiing, “kick” sledding, and ice fishing. As the seasons change, May to September offers opportunities for swimming, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). Three nature reserves, including the renowned Vasaloppet Arena, are just 10 minutes from the hotel. Here, our guests can enjoy the best of both worlds—small-town charm and easy access to nature.
Art lovers will appreciate the Zorn Museum and Zorn’s Mansion, which celebrate the legacy of Anders Zorn, one of Sweden’s most renowned painters.
During his years in Paris, Zorn worked alongside artistic giants like John Singer Sargent, Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Pablo Picasso, and sculptor Auguste Rodin. His portraits of royalty, presidents, and dignitaries can be found across Europe and the United States—five even hang in the White House.
His masterpiece Midsummer Dance (1897), displayed at the Swedish National Gallery, helped put Mora and Dalarna on the cultural map.
Midsummer celebrations in the region remain a cherished tradition, with midsummer pole raising, folk music, traditional costumes, and the magic of the midnight sun.
Step into the world of Nordic folklore at Tomteland, where live actors and immersive adventures bring fairytales to life. With 170,000 visitors annually, the park is open in winter (late November to mid-January), Easter week, summer (June to late August), and during All Saints’ & Halloween week.
Winter sports enthusiasts can enjoy Mount Gesunda and Gopshus Mountain, both just a 15-minute drive away. With the Vasaloppet track located only 100 meters from the hotel, guests can enjoy the convenience of ski-in/ski-out access.
Mora is also the birthplace of the Dala horse, Sweden’s most iconic symbol. Visitors can experience the traditional craftsmanship of these hand-carved and painted figures in the local workshops—a tradition that has been passed down for generations.
Mora Hotel & Spa
A family-owned, independent hotel committed to sustainability through the Green Key program. We prioritize local products, organic ingredients, and eco-friendly products and services.
Our restaurant is one of the top-rated in the region and proudly represents Taste of Dalarna in collaboration with Visit Dalarna. We also work closely with Visit Sweden to showcase Swedish heritage.
We have a strong partnership with the Zorn Foundation, which has long supported and funded the Swedish Academy for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Two notable laureates with ties to Dalarna include Selma Lagerlöf, the first female Nobel Prize winner, who lived in Falun, and Erik Axel Karlfeldt, also from Dalarna.
Our exclusive Chambre de Séparé, known as The Artist’s Room, was once a gathering place for cultural elites during the National Romantic era. Here, you can enjoy dishes inspired by historical recipes while discovering hidden stories and unofficial notes found within the building. For the full experience, we recommend a guided tour of Zorn’s Mansion before your visit.
